A House Full of Music

One of the musically cultural sites in Vienna which fascinates me so much to attend for its great opera and ballet productions is the Vienna State Opera.

‘The first house’ at the Ringstraße boulevard is one of the leading opera houses in the world. Built in 1869, it is an architectural gem dated from the era of Emperor Francis Joseph 1. Because of outstanding opera premieres, unforgettable ballet performances and appearances of the world’s most valued opera singers the house which its past steeped in tradition has always succeeded in the present and will so in the future.

These days the also well-known Vienna Opera Ball should have taken place. For the time being all these events which enrich and cultivate our lives unfortunately are not allowed to take place. Nevertheless the house actually offers the opportunity to visit its impressive inner spaces.

To step up the grand staircase which leads from the ground floor to the first floor gives you a really uplifting feeling, let me say a ‘princess’ one. Rich of rare marble and wonderful wall paintings and stuccos it shows the richness of a past epoch.

The marble statues which encounter you in the stairwell and upstairs represent the seven liberal arts.

I do admire sculpture, these are works of Josef Gasser.

The Schwind Foyer, a break room with access to the loggia and one of the Vienna State Opera’s most beautiful spaces, celebrates the history’s great composers, above all Mozart, Schubert, Haydn, with frescos of Moritz von Schwind in the style of historicism.

And striding this way through these imposing rooms and corridors you hear music all over, you only have to listen!
